Pro Brass Mouthpiece Specifications

The standard range of Pro Brass mouthpieces is designed to cover a wide range of playing situations. Each component of the mouthpiece from the blank to the cup design and backbore, has been carefully matched for consistency, clear attacks and stability throughout the partials.

Our mouthpieces have been designed not by an engineer but by a professional player, with over 30 years’ experience in the music business. We believe in keeping things simple and for that reason we do not do custom work or offer a bewildering range of mouthpieces as a solution to playing problems.

Cup Depths

HC Cups Our HC (high compression) cups are the shallowest cups in the Pro Brass range. The very shallow v-shape contour allows air speed to remain optimal. Players who are able to play with less lip engagement will find this model very effective.

S Cups Shallow bowl shaped cups well suited to lead and commercial work. The slight under bite assists endurance with a cup volume that balances the need for compression with enough depth to play varied styles.

M Cups Medium bowl shaped cups which allow for more lip engagement than the S cups but still offering enough compression to assist the upper register. These mouthpieces are ideal for pit orchestra and other commercial situations. Also popular with jazz soloists.

MC Cups Medium Deep bowl shaped cups which allow for more lip engagement than the M cups. Very good for all round playing. These mouthpieces are also ideal for pit orchestra and other chamber group and commercial situations. Orchestral payers will be at home with these cups for Bb and C trumpets.

C Cups Medium deep bowl shaped cups well suited to all round playing and chamber / orchestral settings

Rims

Standard Rims Our standard rims have a semi round contour which gives the player a sense of grip without too much bite

Wide Rims (W) These rims suit players who more lip surface area making contact with the rim. These are special order only.

Cushion Rims (CR) For players who use a lot of lateral pressure or who need to support thier chops a little more. These are special order only.

Backbores

We offer 4 different backbore sizes which can be ordered with any of our standard range of mouthpieces.

#1 Lead Our narrowest backbore which works perfectly with the HC and ES Lead cups to give high compression without feeling too restrictive.

#2 Lead / Commercial A slightly more open backbore than the #1 the #2 backbore will work well in a variety of commercial situations where a felxibility of tone and attacks is important. This backbore will also work well with our M cups for players seeking a little more resistance without going shallower (special order)

#3 Commercial / Chamber Perfect for all round playing including pit work, light orchestral and jazz solo playing, the #3 is designed to balance perfectly with the our M cups . This backbore will also work well with our C cups for players seeking a little more resistance without going shallower (special order)

#4 Symphony Our "legit" backbore comparable to a standard Bach mouthpiece backbore.
